Adopt A Garden

The ADOPT-A-GARDEN program enlists members of the parish who will adopt specific garden or planting areas within the parish campus. These include around the church proper, parish center building, and the rectory/office building. During the course of the growing season, the people who adopt an area will be responsible for weeding at least monthly, spreading supplied mulch, and perhaps planting annuals and/or perennials to enhance the beauty of the campus. Shrubs will be maintained by other sources depending on the appropriate time of year they require pruning.
Some of the original members have expressed interest in continuing with this ministry and we welcome as many new members that are willing to expend a little time to help make our campus the beautiful place it once was.
For additional information please email Hav Tweedy II at havilantweedy2@gmail.com.

Emmaus

The name Emmaus comes from a scripture passage (Luke 24:13-35), wherein two of Christ's disciples meet Him on the road to Emmaus shortly after His resurrection. At first, the two disciples do not recognize Jesus. However, with night approaching, they invite Him to dine with them and stay the night. It is only then, in the breaking of the bread that their eyes are opened and they recognize Him.

Saint Jude is running an Emmaus Retreat on May 3-5 2019. Open to all teens currently attending high school, the weekend provides an opportunity to examine their own spirituality and relationship with God, form a community with their peers, and open their minds and hearts to learning about and experiencing God in their daily lives.

Over the weekend, candidates (those who are experiencing the Emmaus Retreat for the first time) are asked to be open in beginning or deepening their relationship with God and each other. Each retreat is organized by “Team,” a group of adults and teens who already have been candidates on a previous Emmaus.

Family Mass

Our new Family Mass is at the 9am Sunday Mass. Volunteer teams prepare handouts and visual aids to be used at the Mass. Children are invited to the altar to “participate” in the homily as well as the Eucharistic Prayer.
Volunteers will create the handouts and visual aids based on the themes of the Mass, which have already been set.
Great way to work together with friends or make new friends! Teens highly encouraged to help out as well!

Feed My People

Contact Information: Hank Banville
khbanny617@gmail.com

Each day, members of the ministry visit local establishments that have agreed to donate unsold bakery items that would get thrown out every day unless volunteers pick them up for food kitchens. We service 19 different locations including Catholic and non-Catholic churches, Daughters of Charity Day Care, Homes for the Brave, Bridgeport Rescue Mission,  and Merton House in Bridgeport.

This ministry was started to perform a Corporal Work of Mercy and to fulfill an obligation that Jesus gave us to "feed my people".

Floral Decorating

The Floral Ministry helps to enhance St. Jude's Liturgical celebrations throughout the seasons of the Church and the seasons of the year. We strive to use plants and flowers to provide an inspiring and appropriate environment for worship. Our goal is for parishioners to connect our creations with the beauty and Love of God.  Additionally, we strive to keep the Church vestibule and entries tidy and timely.

We welcome  anyone  who enjoys working with  flowers or watering them to keep them fresh.  Instruction is given!  We alternate  times in performing these tasks.  Please  join us- the more the merrier!

Food Pantry

Contact Information: Liz Romeo

Our ministry serves Monroe and surrounding communities by supplying food upon request to families in need.  Throughout the year, food is collected by our church community and organized in our pantry room. From there, the food is available for families to pick up on a weekly basis.

In addition to our weekly distribution we also have three special packs for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.  At Thanksgiving, the pack is extended to include 30 Senior citizens from a local community.  There are many ways to be part of the food pantry:

  • Help once a month by stocking incoming food then packing for the weekly families.
  • Staff the pantry room while families pick up their food each week.
  • Run extra food to other pantries in the area.
  • Shop during the holidays for the specialty items.
  • Help with the large holiday packs 3 times a year.

Who can volunteer?

Healing Shawl Ministry

Contact Information:
  • For shawls:            Angela    203-452-0432         anbar123@aol.com

  • For ministry information:          Cathy           203-452-5918

What is a healing shawl?
A healing shawl is a garment of love and consolation for a person who is in need.
It is prayerfully knitted, crocheted or sewn for an unknown recipient by a member of the HSM ministry.  The shawl is a selfless, spiritual gift of love and prayer from the maker of the shawl, to the person requesting the shawl, and finally to the recipient.  When the shawl is completed, it is blessed before being presented to the recipient.
Do you know someone who could benefit from the comfort and support from a healing shawl?
It could be a family member, a friend, or even yourself… someone who suffers from a physical, emotional or spiritual ailment, or even loss of faith and trust.  The recipient does not have to be a St. Jude’s parishioner. As a parish in Connecticut, our focus is to provide shawls to people in the surrounding area.

What about privacy?
Our members create these shawls for someone who is in need, and do not know the identity of the recipient or the nature of his or her ailment.  A list of recipients is kept by the HSM Coordinator to eliminate any duplication in shawl gifts.

Do you have anything suitable for men? for children?
Yes.  For men we have tailored shawls, called mantles, in subdued colors.  For children we have colorful fleece blankets and shawls.  There are also blankets available for very young children or infants.

How do I obtain a shawl?
Call or e-mail an HSM Coordinator.  She will prayerfully choose a shawl and give it to the person requesting the shawl.   The shawls are gifts, there is no charge.  If you live outside of Connecticut, we will gladly send you a pocket sized healing square, which is prayerfully made and blessed.

How can I help the Healing Shawl Ministry?
Join us at our meetings held on the first Thursday of each month, 10am in the Social Hall. There are members who do not knit, crochet or sew, but help in other ways, or just want to be a part of the ministry.  Yarn is available, free of charge for members to knit or crochet.

You created every part of me,
Knitting me in my mother’s womb.
For such handiwork, I praise you.
Awesome this great wonder!

Hospitality

Contact Information: John and Nora Mercaldo
johnnora@sbcglobal.net

This ministry was established to encourage communication and inter relationship of all of the parishioners of St. Jude. We as volunteers encourage the community to get to know each other and welcome new families to our church as well as introduce our members to each other so that all of our parish family feels at home at St. Jude.
Our monthly get together is not for teaching or studying our faith, but a social gathering over food and fellowship. Our intention was simple: meet and greet each other, while showing our families we are fellow Catholics searching for friendship and comradeship in our faith.
In addition, we help with other events and functions of the Parish that may arise and need our assistance.

Who can volunteer?
All parishioners (16 years of age or older) may volunteer.

Can I use it for Service Hours?
Yes!

Time Commitment:
One to two hours once a month to assist in serving refreshments and baked goods.

Be hospitable to one another without complaining.
As each one has received a gift,

use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.

This ministry invites our parishioners to have a more active role in the Sacred Liturgies offered on the weekends and Holy Days of Obligation in our Parish.  Members of this ministry volunteer their time to announce the opening of the Mass, proclaim the readings of sacred scriptures, offer prayer intentions and read any announcements that would be appropriate for making parishioners aware of critical activities within the parish.

During Ordinary Time, lectors would be expected to proclaim at one Mass, typically one weekend every month.  During Easter or Christmas Seasons, one additional Mass might be added to their schedule.

No experience is necessary – just a love for proclaiming the Word.

Parish Council

The Parish Pastoral Council of Saint Jude Parish is a consultative body, pastoral in nature, because it strives to discern the movement of the Holy Spirit among God's people in the parish.

The Parish Pastoral Council provides help to our pastor in fostering pastoral activity; it investigates, under the authority of the pastor, all those things which pertain to pastoral works to ponder them, and to propose practical conclusions about them.

The Council meetings occur in the context of prayer and openness to the Holy Spirit, so that at all times the common good will prevail.

Specifically, the Parish Pastoral Council's purpose is to enhance the process of:
  • pastoral planning
  • developing pastoral programs
  • improving pastoral services
  • evaluating the pastoral effectiveness of various programs and services

Vocations

The Vocations Ministry assists our pastoral team in promoting vocational awareness. Its efforts focus on helping parishioners understand that, because of their baptism, they are called to serve God, the Church and their neighbors by following one of several vocational responses:
•The priesthood or the permanent diaconate
•Marriage and family life
•The consecrated life as a professed brother or sister
•As a faithful member who is unmarried
This Ministry organizes events, provides opportunities and connects people with resources that will aid them in exploring their vocational calling.

Ministry members pray and sacrifice for those seeking their true vocation and support activities that foster vocational awareness.
