Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. (Luke 6:38)
God nourishes our soul through the dedicated work of our Pastor, Parochial Vicar, Deacons, and Parish Staff. He does it at our beautiful Parish facilities.
Our Pastor, Parochial Vicar, Deacons, Parish Staff, and lay members of the Parish are all part of our Parish Family. This Parish Family brings us to God each Sunday for the Eucharist. Guides us in joyous celebrations such as Weddings, Baptisms, First Communions, and Confirmations. Counsels us when are struggling and troubled. Consoles us at funerals and times of loss.
This Catholic Parish and Family that gives us so much deserves our support in return. One of the ways we give back to God is by financially supporting this Family as we would any family member.
As your own home has expenses so does your Parish. If we think of our Parish and staff as a part of our lives they become an adopted part of us that we need to support as our own.
The question might be “How much should I give” and there is no easy answer, it depends on each person’s situation. Everyone has to “watch their pennies”. But please consider where you spend your money each week. Do you spend more on Lattes and luxuries for example than you donate to the Church? Would you actually feel better if it was the other way around and you donated more to the Church than you spent on the Lattes and luxuries? It may not be easy but it is worthwhile. As in the Bible story of the poor widow who gave to the temple treasury two small coins she could barely afford (Mk 12:41-44), the donation should be an amount that is a sacrifice to you, and not just from your excess.
Remember-
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)
